As player/refs I think it is incumbent on us all to report refs that purport to be a player/ref.
I think the player/ref system is great but on the weekend we had a player who attempted to pass himself off as a player/ref and was absolutely awful for both sides. There was no real bias he was just bad. We found out and completed an incident report but we all suffered in the game.
The team we played against also new he was not a player/ref, they told us, and yet did nothing about it.
I think if the player/ref from the previous or proceeding game is not available and a player/ref from the team to play is available then that available player/ref must ref. If neither is available then both teams should be receive some penalty.

If you have sent an incident report to MWFA then hopefully they can retrieve the match card to identify the player ref. There is always a chance the guy that refed the game simply put the name and number of an actual player ref in his team.

If the guy was a player ref afterall we can contact him (if MWFA pass on the details) and get him along for some re-training. Ed and I are running a few referee training nights at various clubs staring next month. These sessions are designed to be a refresher and to answer questions. A bit like the referee meetings, only bringing them to the club locations.

We are all volunteers in the committee, and we only have limited resources available, so unfortunately we can only try our best to help improve on what we have. There will still be some player refs who after any number of sessions will still perform poorly. We are going to try to field test player refs this year, so maybe we can at least identify the worse ones to suggest re-training or give someone else in their team a tap on the shoulder.

From what the opposition said I'm pretty sure this guy was not a player/ref.

Thank you for getting out and about to the clubs, it's great to see. In the past many people have seen player/refs as a bit of a joke and its good to see that there is now an effort to educate them. The more u do that, the more willing these players are to be a p/r every year, the more chance there is of them becoming a f/t ref in the future and the better the standard for all round.

Well done Steve.
